Differential Radial Velocities and Stellar Parameters of Nearby Young Stars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Radial velocity searches for substellar mass companions have focused primarily on stars older than 1 Gyr. Increased levels of stellar activity in young stars hinders the detection of solar system analogs and therefore there has been a prejudice against inclusion of young stars in radial velocity surveys until recently. Adaptive optics surveys of young stars have given us insight into the multiplicity of young stars but only for massive, distant companions. Understanding the limit of the radial velocity technique, restricted to high-mass, close-orbiting planets and brown dwarfs, we began a survey of young stars of various ages. While the number of stars needed to carry out full analysis of the problems of planetary and brown dwarf population and evolution is large, the beginning of such a sample is included here. We report on 61 young stars ranging in age from β Pic association (∼12 Myr) to the Ursa Majoris association (∼300 Myr). This initial search resulted in no stars showing evidence for companions greater than ∼1-2 MJup in short period orbits at the 3σ-level. Additionally, we present derived stellar parameters, as most have unpublished values. The chemical homogeneity of a cluster, and presumably of an association, may help to constrain true membership. As such, we present [Fe/H] abundances for the stars in our sample. The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Nearby L/t Binary Brown Dwarf Wisej104915.57−531906.1 at 2 Parsecs from the Sun
WISE J104915.57−531906.1 is a L/T brown dwarf binary located 2 pc from the Sun. The pair contains the closest known brown dwarfs and is the third closest known system, stellar or sub-stellar. We report comprehensive follow-up observations of this newly uncovered system. We have determined the spectral types of both components (L8±1, for the primary, agreeing with the discovery paper; T1.5±2 for...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Nearby Stars in Velocity Space
From the tangential velocities of stars all over the sky, one can, in a statistical way, infer their 3D velocity distribution. An application to Hipparcos data reveals rich structure in the planar stellar motions: there are several moving groups, increasing in number with stellar type but decreasing in importance. A distinct group of outward moving stars with low rotation velocities might be as...
متن کاملA kinematic study of the Taurus - Auriga T association
Aims. This is the first paper in a series dedicated to investigating the kinematic properties of nearby associations of young stellar objects. Here we study the Taurus-Auriga association, with the primary objective of deriving kinematic parallaxes for individual members of this low-mass star-forming region. Methods. We took advantage of a recently published catalog of proper motions for pre-mai...
متن کاملOn the Observability of Giant Protoplanets in Circumstellar Disks
We investigate the possibility to detect giant planets that are still embedded in young circumstellar disks. Based on models with different stellar, planetary, and disk masses, and different radial positions of the planet we analyze the resulting submillimeter appearance of these systems. We find that the influence of the planet on the spectral energy distribution could not be distinguished fro...
